Calibration

According to IATF 16949:2016 when we should get the instrument calibrated

IATF 16949:2016 (formerly known as ISO/TS 16949) is an international quality management system standard for the automotive industry, developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). The standard outlines the requirements for an organization’s quality management system to ensure high-quality products and services.

Regarding calibration, IATF 16949:2016 does not provide specific intervals at which instruments should be calibrated. Instead, it requires organizations to establish and maintain documented procedures for the calibration and maintenance of inspection, measuring, and test equipment.

These procedures should include the following aspects:

1. Criteria for determining calibration intervals: The organization must define the criteria for determining calibration intervals based on factors such as the manufacturer’s recommendations, the instrument’s usage, the environmental conditions, and historical calibration data.

2. Calibration traceability: Calibration should be traceable to national or international standards, and the organization should maintain records of the calibration results.

3. Verification of calibration: The organization should verify the calibration status of the equipment before use, ensuring that it is within the specified calibration interval.

4. Handling and storage: Proper handling and storage procedures should be in place to ensure that the equipment remains in good condition and maintains its calibration status.

5. Control of nonconforming equipment: If any equipment is found to be out of calibration or not functioning correctly, the organization must follow a documented process to control and correct the issue. This includes evaluating the impact of the nonconforming equipment on previous measurements and taking appropriate actions.

6.Maintenance: The organization should implement a maintenance plan for inspection, measuring, and test equipment to ensure that it remains in optimal working condition.

In summary, IATF 16949:2016 requires organizations to establish their calibration intervals based on defined criteria and maintain documented procedures for calibration and equipment maintenance. It is essential to consult the standard and tailor your calibration program to meet the specific requirements and ensure compliance with IATF 16949:2016.
